Women get their basic health care from a family physician or other primary care provider, and often that includes reproductive health care. In an attempt to tame this beast, Oregon recently established a system of coordinated care organizations, or CCOs, to (as the name suggests) coordinate medical, mental health, and dental care for residents enrolled in Oregon Health Plan, the state's Medicaid program. At UMKC, nearly 43 percent of those who matched did so in one of the primary care specialties. Especially in rural and low-income areas, family physicians do it all! Students today are more accomplished, more diverse, and there is now a focus on the highly relevant basic science of medical practice, including medical ethics and public health. A fine complement to the curriculum of medical students and a leading text for primary care residents and physicians. In a dismaying move, the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has proposed changes to the guidelines for family medicine residency programs removing the requirement that residents learn to provide contraception. PCPs, you'd think the CCOs would jump at the chance to include them. It is a student-‐initiated project and we receive our funds primarily through the fundraising events we host.
